Chapter Ten

A New Hideout

Andy and Trudy drove down Route 44 with heavy hearts. They couldn’t remember the last time they felt so sad. They were both in the depths of depression. They wondered if they would ever see Rose and Gino again.

“I am really going to miss them,” said Trudy. “It was so nice there. I could have spent the rest of my life there.”

“I know how you feel,” said Andy. “Even though the work was hard and the hours long I loved every minute of it.”

“Me too,” said Trudy with sadness in her voice. “I wish I knew what the FBI is up to. Did they get our message? Are they investigating? How can we find out? We can’t call somehow can we?”

“I’m afraid not,” said Andy. “If they don’t believe you and more probable don’t care we would be giving away our position.”

“We will just have to wait and trust God,” Trudy added

“Our mood at present shows us that we are not trusting God the way we should,” said Andy.

They drove for hours through the Ozarks and into Oklahoma.

“What type of security should we take?” asked Trudy “I suspect it won’t be long before the Smithville police learn that we are in Oklahoma. They will be looking for us around here. We have to keep a close eye on the newspaper. They may put our picture on the front page of every newspaper in this state.”

“I don’t think that they could get anything out this fast,” said Andy.

“Maybe not, but if it does come out later these people could remember us and report that we were in this area,” said Trudy.

“I vote that we chance it,” said Andy. “We can’t live in complete isolation.”

Andy took the exit when he saw the sign that read, “Papa Luigi’s.” It wasn’t very impressive. Andy decided he would have to make two or even three signs.

They parked the car along side of the restaurant building and walked inside hand in hand. Andy had long ago forgotten that Trudy was black. Two years ago he would have felt self-conscious walking hand in hand with a black girl. There was no one in the restaurant. They could hear some noise coming from the kitchen area.

“Hello,” shouted Andy. “Is anyone here?”

“We are closed for lunch,” said a friendly woman’s voice. The woman was a jolly looking middle aged woman. She looked very much like Rose except a little slimmer. Her voice was also a little higher in pitch.

“I’m Andy Andersen and this is Trudy York,” said Andy.

“Oh yes,” she said. “We have been expecting you.”

“What did Rose tell you about me,” asked Trudy.

“She told me the problems you have and that I should hide and protect you from the police. I’m Nicolina Rosini. Every one calls me ‘Nickie’”. She then called her husband. “My husband’s name is Gino but some call him Luigi after his father and the restaurant.” He came out immediately. He figured who they were and embraced both of them.

“So glad you got here safely,” he said.
